General information about the Special Education program

The studying program offers both theoretical and practical knowledge. In the theoretical part the students are being taught the general history of special education and the changes in the perception of people with disability in comparison with the latest trends. The graduate should be oriented in the special education literature as well as in defining each disability.
The practical part specializes on diagnosing, special education methodology and therapy, which can be used for all levels and group ages of disabilities. The student also acquires some specific knowledge e.g. about alternative educational methods such as drama therapy and art therapy in the special facilities for the disabled. Another important part of the program is the application of the latest technical equipment in the special education, the development of the compensation accessories, the position of the disabled in the Czech republic. Sport activities, drama courses and foreign language teaching are also a very important part of the program.

Information on individual subjects

Psychopedie – special education of people with mental retardation

Students acquire the knowledge necessary for work in specialized facilities for mentally retarded clients. These are mostly special daycare centers, counseling services for all school levels, kindergartens and schools for children with special needs, vocational schools.

Logopedie – speech and language therapy

Students can choose from the teaching and non-teaching degree in speech therapy. Students of speech therapy with the teaching degree concentrate on acquiring knowledge necessary for working at special kindergartens and schools, vocational schools, counseling centers and services for all school levels as well as at the health facilities. The speech therapy with the non-teaching degree, specializes in preparing the graduate to work at the medical facilities such as foniatric and neurologic medical departments. The graduate should be also able to work in the field of prevention.

Somatopedie – special education of people with physical disability, or suffering from a long term disease

The students acquire knowledge for working at the special schools, centers, counseling services for the physically handicapped. The graduate can also work as counselor for the physically handicapped at all types and levels of schools.

Surdopedie – special education of people with hearing impairment

The students acquire knowledge for the professional work at the special education centers for the hearing impaired, such as special kindergartens, schools, vocational schools. The graduate can also work as a counselor for the hearing impaired.

Tyflopedie – special education for the visually impaired

The students acquire knowledge for the professional work at the special education centers for the clients with visual impairment, such as special kindergartens, schools, vocational schools. The graduate can also work as a counselor for the visually impaired.

Etopedie – special education of people with emotional and behavioral problems

The students acquire knowledge for the professional work at the special education centers, diagnostic facilities, counseling centers for the clients with emotional and behavioral problems. The graduate can also work as a counselor in various prisons.
